The unusually explicit cases
ADVENT 1.9: Auto Eroto names Gil Scott-Heron’s “Lady Day and John Coltrane” and calls Scott-Heron an “Actual Primary Vocal Influence.” This is about as strong a genealogy statement as the corpus gives. “Lady Day and John Coltrane” ↗
ALGO PALACE gives a parallel statement for Saul Williams, calling him “easily one of my primary artistic influences” and recalling a formative live performance seen around age sixteen or seventeen. These two cases matter because they stop the wiki from treating every named musician equally.
THIRTEEN DREAMS featuring Abiogenesis is even more precise at song level: it calls Q-Tip’s “Vivrant Thing” the most obvious musical reference for “Abiogenesis” and identifies it as a favorite song at fourteen. Q-Tip — Vivrant Thing ↗
The self-curated neighborhood is not a family tree
The Light of Heaven Shines Upon You provides a huge reader-facing neighborhood: Portishead, Scott Walker, Fiona Apple, Bark Psychosis, Swervedriver, Pulp, Deftones, System of a Down, Soul Coughing, Swans, Can, Dax Riggs, Melanie de Biasio, Glassjaw, Mr. Bungle, At the Drive-In, Cave In, David Sylvian, Joy Division, Leonard Cohen, Morphine, Alice in Chains, Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Tricky, Beck and Nine Inch Nails.
The 2024 PEAK AROUSAL field overlaps but also opens sideways into Nina Simone, Aphex Twin, Meredith Monk, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, Chucho Valdés and Puccini. These are best read as listening neighborhoods / transmission aids: “if this constellation makes sense to you, there may be a door here.” They are not all claims of compositional descent.
The wrong comparison is still evidence
Seven Veils records someone saying the music sounds like Tom Waits; the author is unhappy with the comparison and relieved not to hear another Nick Cave comparison. Negative comparison belongs in the genealogy map because it documents a perceived resemblance the artist actively resists.
This is the musical counterpart to the Residents anti-ancestor elsewhere in the wiki: resemblance denied is still cultural information.
Algorithms as involuntary DJs
ALGO PALACE treats Spotify artist-radio as a forensic instrument. Conway the Machine, AFX, Ghostpoet, Radiohead, Scott Walker, the Residents, King Krule, Bilal, David Sylvian and many others are not all “influences”; some are what the platform decides belongs nearby. The gap between self-understanding and machine adjacency is the work.
THE TELL-ALL HEART performs a similar exercise with Drexciya, Einstürzende Neubauten, HTRK, Grails, Animal Collective, Forest Swords and others. Idol Singer of an Empty Hour lets YouTube drag a Monster Magnet listening session into Takashi Kokubo. The algorithm is not just delivery infrastructure; it becomes a cultural critic with terrible manners.
The record collection is social memory
Auto Eroto is one of the densest demonstrations: David Banner, TLC, Sly Fox, Bernie Worrell and other references appear through karaoke, apps, a bassist, social recognition and remembered performance. The names are attached to who was there, who knew what, what could be sung, what somebody recognized.
The Fused Man does something quieter: a truck-radio scan moves from Garth Brooks through static Janet Jackson and ads to Tennessee Ernie Ford while a child plays Dr. Mario. Music, game hardware, class, place and father-child memory become inseparable.
Six Television Commercials explicitly covers/excerpts Scott Walker’s “Farmer in the City”; PALAVER TWIST xx explicitly identifies a Scaled Alps cover of Alice in Chains’ “Would?”. Repertoire is a stronger relation than similarity.
The canon can be used as a pile of syllables
EGOTERRORISM contains an accelerated compound-name sequence — Iggy Presley, Elvis Reed, Lou Reznor, Trent Steele, Peter Summer, Donna Sylvian, David Tankian, Serj Tricky Waits, Tom Walker, Scott Yorke, Thom… — where rock history becomes a word-combination engine. This is not influence attribution. It is cultural canon as phonetic inventory.
Likewise, the Electronic Lover source gives Roxy Music as “Dream Home Heartache”; the actual Roxy title is In Every Dream Home a Heartache. That is best preserved as a source-level corruption rather than silently corrected out of existence. Roxy Music title control ↗

Common-name bands such as Can, Beck, Pulp and Eels were not machine-counted into the ledger unless context was manually secure. This is why the prose can name them while the literal-count table omits them.
