Four negative relations
The resemblance is obvious enough that the corpus explicitly refuses the apparent parent.
A predecessor becomes obstacle, rival, test or persistent irritation.
A predecessor is invoked sympathetically and then marked by historical disappointment.
A prior proposition states a serious case against something the corpus itself practices.
Strong cases
WHY THE COMPARISON APPEARS
Masks, aliases, long multimedia accumulation, unstable identity, invented histories and a band-world larger than ordinary discography make the resemblance almost comically plausible.
SOURCE FACT
Algo Palace stops on the band and says: “Never did care for this band.” It notes the enormous body of material and having watched the documentary, then immediately distinguishes how much the work was felt.
RESULT
Keep the resemblance. Refuse the convenient influence story.
CONTACT
ADVENT 1.10 calls Beckett a “continual tormentor and obstacle and prismatic familiar, mascot?” Later Ego Altar imagines having to “ONE-UP” him.
WHAT THIS MEANS
Repeated exposure is real, but filiation arrives as competitive pressure rather than obedience.
SPLIT
Beckett can be an ancestor one wants to beat.
CONTACT
SKLĒROS/ANTI-SKLĒROS opens “with apologies” to them and to any other doomed fool utopian who believed in an optimistic networked future.
WHAT SURVIVES
The disappointment presupposes sympathy with the original promise: open networks, user agency, possibility.
SPLIT
The lineage is an obituary for an optimism, not simply an endorsement or sneer.
PROPOSITION
UBILAZ quotes: “Subtle and mysterious words are no business of the people,” then tags the source “early / evil / backwards.”
WHY IT BITES
The sentence is a compact prosecution of private lexicons, typographic difficulty, occult vocabulary and protective/hostile encoding.
RESULT
Do not neutralize it merely because the local voice mocks it. It remains a live argument.
CONTACT
Night Blooming Jasmine directly attributes the familiar bird/naming formulation to Krishnamurti.
RHYMES
Names, maps and categories can replace perception; the corpus repeatedly worries about confusing the line with the field.
SPLIT
JQD also treats naming as instantiation: a name may create a usable object, role, institution or world. Naming can blind and build.
CONTACT
Situationist technical vocabulary and bibliography are direct. Bataille is directly named and Acéphale recurs.
WHY THEY MATTER
Psychogeography, détournement, spectacle, excess and sacred/profane collision are genuine routes into parts of the work.
WHY THEY STOP
Commerce, producthood and promotion remain usable artistic materials; transgression is not the corpus’s terminal value.
False friends are valuable
A false friend is not a failed research result. It records a resemblance that future readers are likely to make and explains why it should not automatically become genealogy. The Residents case is the cleanest model. The same discipline applies whenever the wiki encounters a famous figure who would make the work look more prestigious if declared an influence.
Rule
Resemblance survives denied influence. Contact survives disagreement. Reading survives mockery. A precursor can be a wall.
