There is no single “drug theme”
Substances enter the corpus as lived condition, social choreography, commodity, class signal, medical technology, memory hazard, metaphor and formal instruction. The distinction matters. A joint in a party scene does different work from a cannabis business, a pharmaceutical sedative, an LSD anecdote, or the phrase “amphetamine teeth.”
1. Intoxication can be documentary pressure
THE SIMULATED RUM DIARIES: Dry Out or Die! [skeleton.gif] is the bluntest case: liquor and drugs are framed as an actual threat to continued life and public functioning, then the text immediately complicates “psychedelic” as a category. ADVENT 1.5: Le Smoking treats tobacco like an Erowid trip report and tracks smoking through family history, harm, fashion and altered sensation. ADVENT 1.14: Yves, of the Apocalypse records a blackout/lost-time episode involving alcohol, smoke and psilocybin, with the missing hours reconstructed from what came home and what did not.
2. Party chemistry is also narrative technology
In 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐎𝐑 𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐑𝐎𝐑𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐌, buckets of beer, wine, joints, powders and “designer drugs” are not backdrop. They help produce the work’s unstable names, blurred identities, broken vessels, dropped drinks, unreliable point of view and camera-like drift. In RETIRE HER, MDMA, weed, champagne, high-THC pre-rolls and persistent drinking become part of aging, appetite, sex, money and the knowledge that pleasure has a timetable even when the characters would rather not.
3. The drug economy keeps switching legal status
█ENDSTAGE! says plainly that, for a period, the narrator was selling weed “volume game,” then folds that memory into cannabis entrepreneurs and social networks. Slain Hero gives Frasier Fussy a fortune from a legal cannabis brand. ADVENT 1.5: Le Smoking remembers illicit-growing stigma beside later multi-million-dollar legal cannabis wealth. The same object can therefore pass from vice to venture capital without changing its chemistry.
4. Chemistry leaks into language
The corpus repeatedly refuses to keep drug words pharmacologically tidy. Make It Sound Like Amphetamine Teeth turns stimulant language into a sonic instruction. THE SIMULATED RUM DIARIES: Dry Out or Die! [skeleton.gif] argues that McDonald’s, cigarettes, LSD, music and imagined masturbation can all be called psychedelic, effectively attacking the category by overextending it. A Kid Named Lost in Death City converts information consumption into addiction/intoxication. In 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐎𝐑 𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐑𝐎𝐑𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐌, light itself is “like any other drug.”
5. Pharmaceutical respectability does not exempt chemistry
Sketches of San Lucero places “Prescription addiction,” rehab and Sackler-backed cultural/philanthropic respectability in the same civic collage as dealers and counterfeiters. OTHERWORLD AESTHETICS™ (NOT A CULT THIS TIME) packages pharmaceutical-grade sedation as part of a luxury “abduction” service. RETIRE HER gives medical authority its own chemical vocabulary — birth control, SSRIs, the doctor who counts drinks, and the section title “PUSH-PILL RELATIONSHIP.”
Substance map
| Substance family | Typical functions in the corpus | Source routes |
|---|---|---|
| Cannabis / weed / marijuana / hashish SOCIAL DRUG / COMMODITY / MEMORY | The corpus moves cannabis between private use, parties, formative memory, commercial cultivation, legal wealth and outright dealing. The legal status changes; the plant stays useful. | .EXE: 150 People I Don't Need, Described · ADVENT 1.1: The Apophoenix · █ENDSTAGE! · 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐎𝐑 𝐇𝐎𝐑𝐑𝐎𝐑𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐌 · +17 more |
| Cocaine / crack PARTY / CLASS / STREET ECONOMY | Cocaine can signal luxury-nightlife, old L.A. memory or underworld commerce; crack more often arrives as social ruin, accusation, shorthand or street condition. | ADVENT 1.12: VITALI & I · RETIRE HER · THE SIMULATED RUM DIARIES: Dry Out or Die!
