Ancient texts and myth: authority gets demoted into use
| Figure / source | JQD anchor | Operation |
|---|---|---|
| Thucydides, Peloponnesian War 3.82 | A Kid Named Lost in Death City | DIRECT QUOTE — the Corcyra passage about words changing ordinary meaning becomes a bridge into semantic camouflage and institutional lying. |
| Oedipus | SPACE FLYING TIGER 001 | “Edipo. Oedipus.” is proposed as a wrestler name and immediately reduced to the problem of “an incest gimmick.” High tragedy becomes booking logic. |
| Circe / Medea | Actual Attack Documentation | “I’m Circe. I’m Medea.” Mythic women function as portable threat-identities. |
| Sisyphus | Last Trenta Nowhere | “Sisyphus stoned alone … pushing. uphill…” — the punishment image is compressed into contemporary physical / psychic stuckness. |
| Icarus | FutureSport 90-90 · Animated Grief · OTHERWORLD AESTHETICS · ANICONISM | A recurring airborne/fall-risk figure: dunk flight, dewinging, precarity, “Sicario Icarus.” The recurrence is stronger than a one-off namedrop. |
| Telemachus / Minotaur | Cat of Creases · SUNA RALOS | Telemachus becomes a repeated first-person signal; Minotaur becomes the obstacle inside an explicitly cheat-able maze. |
| Cassandra | Breathe With Me As America Ends | “CASSANDRA BASIC” compresses the cursed-prophet role into a contemporary political diagnosis / persona tag. |
| Calypso | ZETA ADVERSUS | “Calypso-tangled limbs” uses the name as binding/enchantment texture rather than narrative retelling. |
| Prometheus | IMPOSSIBLEISM | “zombified Prometheus … playing at fire” turns the civilizational benefactor into damaged technological persistence. |
| Pegasus | Vorescient Form · Animated Grief | Words are “given wings (IN THE MANNER OF A PEGASUS)”; elsewhere Pegasus is explicitly dewinged. The myth is a machine for transmission and failure. |

Master texts and adversarial reading
With One Hand, Erase the Dagger says outright that it is using The Sayings of the Desert Fathers “as a master text,” then immediately worries the word “master.” This is among the strongest source relationships in the corpus because the source is not merely quoted — it is declared as a generative procedure.
ADVENT 1.10 gives another unusually intimate relation: Samuel Beckett is “my continual tormentor and obstacle and prismatic familiar,” and the text reports repeatedly waking on pages 15–17 of Molloy. ADVENT 1.7 then breaks the famous Beckett persistence formula into “I could go on. I must go on. I can’t go on. I’ll goon.” The relationship is reading, irritation, memory failure and joke at once.
Later literary canon: intact quotation beside mutilation
| Writer / work | Anchor | Relation |
|---|---|---|
| John Keats, “When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be” | The Event of the Ad | DIRECT QUOTE ending with the “shore / Of the wide world” and love/fame sinking into nothingness; then the work returns to editorial exhaustion. Keats reference ↗ |
| Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote | Kawakubo (Prosperity Gospel) | DIRECT QUOTE — “as being singular in his art, he ought to be spared,” from the library-scrutiny / book-burning chapter. Don Quixote I.6 ↗ |
| James Joyce | The Spectacularist Waxes | DIRECT INSTRUCTION — the reader is told to Google an etymology and “think about James Joyce for long enough” to approach chaos, art and magic. |
| Virginia Woolf, Mrs Dalloway | Quantum Entendre | DIRECT QUOTE — Woolf’s doomed-race / sinking-ship passage is explicitly attributed. |
| Jorge Luis Borges | Dummies Invariably Fell Heavily to Earth | DIRECT QUOTE — the source attributes a 1975 statement on abstractions, writing for oneself/friends and passing time. |
| William Blake, Nebuchadnezzar | Hypersigil XV | Blake’s work is placed directly beside “THE WORK IS COMPLETE” / JQD: “The work is never complete,” creating a tiny staged argument over completion. |
| Baudelaire / Nabokov / Artaud / others | Quantum Entendre | READING ROOM / SYNTHETIC APPARATUS — they appear in a bibliography-like field. Presence here is not the same as declared influence; the page should preserve that distinction. |
Canonical titles as reusable chassis
| JQD title | Prior title | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Starvation Artist in a Hostage Telethon | Kafka, A Hunger Artist | STRONG TITLE MUTATION — hunger becomes starvation; solitary spectacle becomes coercive telethon. |
| the STRANGE CASE of the ELECTRONIC LOVER | R. L. Stevenson, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde | STRONG TITLE MUTATION — the “strange case” frame is repurposed for synthetic intimacy. Project Gutenberg ↗ |
| THE TELL-ALL HEART | Poe, The Tell-Tale Heart | STRONG TITLE MUTATION — confession/media language replaces the tale/telling mechanism. |
| THE SIMULATED RUM DIARIES | Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary | TITLE MUTATION — diary authenticity is made simulated before the work begins. |
| Seven Veils | Wilde, Salomé / biblical Salome tradition | STACKED TITLE / IMAGE LINEAGE — the Bible supplies the dance narrative; Wilde supplies the famous “seven veils.” Wikisource ↗ |
| “Thou Art God” | Robert A. Heinlein, Stranger in a Strange Land | PROBABLE FINGERPRINT — highly distinctive and prominent in Heinlein, but not author-confirmed here. Google Books ↗ |
Canon as antagonist, prop and stolen equipment
| Source | Anchor | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Georges Bataille, “Solar Anus” | SUNA RALOS | The text jokes that the reader’s ignorance grants “free license to steal” from Bataille, then names “Solar Anus.” This is direct contact wearing parody rather than reverence. |
| Guillaume Apollinaire | ADVENT 1.6 | “DUMBSHIT APOLLINAIRE of the LEFT BANK of LOS ANGELES”: ancestry performed as insult, local mutation and self-positioning. |
| Aldous Huxley | Ego Altar | A direct attributed maxim — “Love is a mode of knowledge” — enters an argument about voices, self-address and Nobel ambition. |
| George Orwell / 1984 | I Respect You, Booker-Man | The cliché of calling contemporary censorship “literally 1984” is invoked and mocked at the same time. |
| William S. Burroughs | Night Blooming Jasmine | A curse on a realtor is explicitly laid “in the manner of Burroughs’ assault on the Moka Bar”: source contact becomes a procedure to reenact. |
| Kafka / vermin | SCALED ALPS 2.1 | A Montblanc Kafka pen gets a “vermin-nib,” collapsing author, commodity and Metamorphosis-residue into one prop. |
| Alfred Jarry / Ubu | Your Ass Ideas / The Visionaire | “Pare ubu ululation” and “Jarry nights” appear together: enough redundancy to register a strong Jarry/Ubu fingerprint. |
| “O Fortuna” | Oh let me be only utter beauty… | The medieval / Carmina Burana invocation is pulled into a rhyming contemporary lyric block. |
For the complete ledger — including rejected “Virgil,” “Wilde,” “Chekhov,” “Conrad,” “symposium,” “poetics,” “wasteland” and other seductive machine hits — see The Library in the Walls.
Other sacred / philosophical registers
The scan was not limited to the Western “Great Books” shelf. It found fewer direct non-Christian scripture-title citations, but several old religious/philosophical forms are actively repurposed:
| Form | Anchor | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| NON-DOING 無爲 | Low-Minded Purposeless Frippery | Daoist wu wei vocabulary appears directly as “non-doing”; this is a concept-level contact, not a named Dao De Jing citation. |
| DIAMANDA SUTRA | Deathtraps for Live Players | PROBABLE BROKEN TITLE — a highly suggestive mutation of “Diamond Sutra,” also compatible with the corpus’s habit of turning names into phonetic machinery; no direct source claim is forced. |
| “zirconian sutra” | No Music On | “Sutra” is used as a productive sacred/formal suffix rather than the title of a specific scripture. |
| “a lively dzogchen meditation on the merits of perineal sunbathing” | SUNA RALOS | Dzogchen is deliberately stapled to Bataille’s “Solar Anus,” producing an absurd cross-tradition gloss rather than a sober doctrinal comparison. |
What happens to prestige
A useful distinction emerges between citation and social rank. The corpus is perfectly capable of quoting Thucydides or Keats accurately, but accuracy does not oblige reverence. Oedipus can become a wrestler name. The Desert Fathers can become lyric machinery. Cervantes can defend an art worker. Beckett can become “I’ll goon.” The canonical object is granted continued life precisely because it remains available for misuse.
This also explains why the page should not be titled “Influences.” Some of these are influences; some are memories, tools, phrases, reading episodes, jokes, archetypes, cultural common property or later recognition. The connective fact is that older texts remain operational.
