Cringe is a social technology
POST-CRINGE treats cringe not simply as an emotion but as a behavioral regulator: anticipation of being judged can prevent speech, style, desire or experiment before any external sanction arrives. “Post-cringe” therefore names an attempted operating condition, not the absence of self-awareness.
Audience creates bodily risk
Subscriber guilt, fear of boring or alienating readers, humiliation in performance, status loss, being looked at wrong, being publicly misclassified: the audience is repeatedly felt as a potential wound. This makes shame one of the hidden costs of the corpus’s relentless direct address.
Humiliation is often classed
The fear of the bus ride, rental housing, off-brand clothing, bad job, failed career, public incompetence or social demotion recurs beside more intimate embarrassment. Shame attaches to material position as readily as sexuality or artistic failure.
