“Ordinary” is especially difficult to quantify because ordinary language is the language of almost everything. The scan therefore uses a conservative set of mundane actions/objects and treats the result as a lead generator only.
Mundane detail is evidentiary ballast
A grocery store, coffee purchase, kitchen ingredient, parking meter, shower, job schedule or garbage zone makes an otherwise extravagant narrative answer to material reality. The details do not prove truth, but they give the fiction/document a surface that resists pure abstraction.
The ordinary continually interrupts the grand system
A philosophical passage has to stop for rent; a cosmic idea occurs in the shower; a walk-score finds broken glass; an underworld narrative needs a bus; a relationship still has to decide who goes to work in the morning. This interruption is one of the corpus’s most reliable anti-pretension mechanisms.
Daily life generates work rather than merely appearing inside it
Car crashes outside while writing, dogs bark into the text, a street encounter becomes a post, a piece of clothing becomes an institution, a neighborhood business becomes fictional geography. The ordinary world repeatedly supplies the raw event that later acquires larger machinery.
Banal labor is where systems become testable
A theory of competence sounds different when applied to cleaning a lot, running a restaurant, designing transit signage, repairing a house or doing a job while tired. Ordinary tasks are small enough that claims about institutions can be checked against whether anything actually works.
The ordinary is not the opposite of the uncanny
The wiki already has an “Unnerving Ordinary” route. This page adds the reverse emphasis: the banal does not need to become uncanny to matter. Its importance is that it continues beneath myth, persona, archive and metaphysics whether or not anybody notices it.
