The ghost of Gregory Gone
Gregory has become gaunt enough that his old clothes hang differently and even his own self-recognition is unstable. In a park he sees Cecile, to whom he had once been engaged; she walks past without recognizing him.
Function
The episode translates the work's larger terminal language into an ordinary perceptual event. A person can become “ghost” before death when the social image by which others know him no longer matches the body in front of them.
