A perfume can be a literal scent, a memory trigger, a fictional product, a lyric image and a visual design system. A place can be documentary geography in one work and distorted civic mythology in another.

Practical value of the atlas
The corpus is large enough that continuity cannot depend on remembering every appearance. This atlas is therefore designed to recover latent adjacency: the reader can arrive through a record, garment, neighborhood, smell, line of prose or fictional character and discover what else that object has touched.
