Comedy is not a relief valve added to otherwise serious work. It is one of the principal methods by which seriousness is tested. A metaphysical or political claim is frequently forced to survive contact with vulgarity, brand names, bad puns, corporate language, wrestling logic, bodily embarrassment or an abruptly stupid detail.

Abrasion

The comedy can be hostile. “Shut the fuck up,” insults, fake warnings and reader-directed provocation recur often enough to become a recognizable surface. Their function varies: sometimes exclusion, sometimes intimacy, sometimes rhythm, sometimes a way to puncture the false politeness of institutional language.

Why it matters to interpretation

Reading the corpus as solemn theory misses a basic safeguard built into it: nearly every system is eventually made ridiculous. The joke does not always cancel the proposition. More often it tests whether the proposition can continue functioning after prestige has been removed.
