The transplant matters as much as rarity

Aniconism, apophenia, kayfabe, vranyo, Geheimnisträger, cicisbeo, pankration, mirliton-related vocabulary and innumerable technical or historical terms are interesting because of where they are moved, not because the corpus necessarily invented them.

The vocabulary routinely jumps disciplinary fences. A wrestling term can explain civic behavior; psychiatric or medical vocabulary can become institutional criticism; an occult term can become production language; fashion terminology can carry class information; a technical word can be turned into comedy or lyric percussion.

Against the “75th-grade reading level” caricature

The lexical surface can indeed become aggressively elevated or obscure, but the same work may immediately collapse into profanity, slang, phonetic babble or a stupid joke. Difficulty is therefore less a stable “reading level” than a register-switching system. The reader may need a dictionary for one clause and no literacy whatsoever for the next sound effect.

Editorial rule

The expanded lexicon now treats external or uncertain provenance as a positive category rather than an embarrassment. The right question is often not “did JQD invent this?” but “why did this particular word get dragged here?”

False friends from the old dictionary

Several entries once filed as coinages turned out to have older lives. They stay visible here rather than vanishing.
