The hard case: actual gematria
Après moi, l’illusion: ∄ INFᴱᴿᴵ0ᴿ 1/∞ removes the need to guess whether numerology ever becomes a literal compositional procedure. Its preface says that a deliberately incoherent spaced-out sequence was assembled from numerical equivalents of “James Quentin Devine” produced through several gematria techniques. It explicitly glosses these as divination methods, then says the most deranged or evocative phrases were selected and cut up for collage.
The important formal move is not belief-testing. A numerical transform supplies material the conscious writer did not simply phrase in advance. Numerology functions like other aleatory procedures in the corpus: an external rule generates a field from which charged fragments can be selected.
The code appears earlier
Perfect Information Endureth to the End gives a concrete earlier example: “James Quentin Devine in Jewish Gematria equals 1953,” then prints the letter-value breakdown and repeats “DO NOT LOSE THIS CODE.” The later Après moi preface therefore reads partly as retrospective disclosure of an already visible numerical practice.
ERRATICA supplies the comic counter-pressure: amid count fragments and an 80 BPM walking instruction appears a pamphlet asking, “IS THE MONEY SYSTEM SATANIC NUMBER MAGIC?” The corpus can invoke number magic and ridicule number-magic paranoia within the same year.
Three and seven
The Key is 3 invokes division into three, father/son/spectre, a third day, counting and tricard monte — then undermines its own numerological confidence by warning that looking for threes makes them appear. Seven has an even longer documentary trail: Seven Veils, a “7th Unveiling,” Sevened, seven lines and an explicit “I SAW THE SEVEN.”
Cheap symbolism is also in the room
I Didn’t Say Anything puts “13s and 69s” beside “420” and calls them “The obvious.” The joke is useful. The corpus can deploy charged numbers while also recognizing the stock symbolic baggage that readers bring to them.
Divination and patternicity
Numerology is therefore one special case of Patterning Instinct / Apophenia. Sometimes the pattern is generated by a declared procedure; sometimes a reader notices repetition after the fact. The encyclopedia keeps those evidentiary states separate.
Occult provenance
Gematria predates the JQD corpus and belongs to a much older history of letter-number interpretation. The works use it as a procedure for generating language rather than as evidence that every number in the corpus carries hidden meaning. Crowley appears inside Après moi, l’illusion's generated sequence, but that occurrence should not be read backward as proof that the entire procedure is Thelemic.
