The EGOTERRORISM liner book describes the record as an INFINITE PLAYING (IP) RECORD and immediately insists: “IT IS INCOMPLETE.” The phrase gives formal status to unfinishedness rather than treating it as a defect to be hidden.
What remains visible
The book lists sketch marks and tape, songs that run too long or stop abruptly, ill-fit starts, mouse clicks, dog barks, unresolved ideas and “things no trained professional would do.” The important distinction is that these are not simply accidents left in by carelessness; they are presented as evidence that the work has not been sterilized into an impossible state of finality.
Infinite versus endless
“Infinite Playing” does not require one audio file to continue forever. It describes a work whose boundaries remain porous: earlier songs are reabsorbed, lyric lines migrate from writing, streaming editions point back to a fuller site, covers bring other authors into the sequence, and a Scaled Alps credit enters a JQD record at the last track.
Related structures
The idea rhymes with Anticipatory Archive, Score / Protocol / Instruction, and the later process emphasis of Prepared Piano: Walk 00001: a work can be sufficiently real to circulate while remaining open to continuation.
