A recurring structure in which a mediated object contains an exit from mediation: the screen, post, interface or recording becomes useful partly by returning the recipient to attention, embodiment, encounter or making outside itself.

The pattern is not a general claim that technology is bad. The mediated thing can be successful precisely when it restores agency and produces a different encounter.
