Overview

The practice turns a long-running artistic imperative—leave the screen, move the body, look at the actual environment—into something another person can execute without knowing the surrounding theory.

Form and structure

The work is a literal executable score: another person can perform it, and performing it constitutes part of the artwork. L.E.W.A.N. supplies an institutional presentation layer, but the protocol does not depend on the reader investing in that minor fiction.

Inside the work

PREPARED PIANO: WALK 00001 turns an instruction into a documented encounter. The initial prompt is deliberately simple—a minimum walk, no phone except emergency, and the instruction to move as though returning to the world after being improperly stored—but the realized walk immediately contradicts prediction. The guessed first attractive light is not the actual one; the guessed first ugly object is not the actual one. Observation humiliates preconception.

The piece then becomes increasingly exact about the body: stride length, stride frequency, head and chin, posterior neck, gaze, jaw, tongue, hands, feet, breathing, garment tension, fabric movement, silhouette, distance from light, lens and threat. This provides one concrete instance of Lines Imposed Upon Fields—measurement can sharpen perception while also threatening to turn the walker into an object under surveillance—but the work need not be reduced to that single recurring conceit.

The crucial recursive instruction is to permit awareness that observation is modifying the body, then to permit awareness of that awareness. The walk is therefore not a wellness routine hidden in an artwork. It is a practical experiment in feedback: prompt → world → correction → posture → self-observation → altered world.

Its civic details matter as much as its somatic ones. Street signs, balconies, agave shadows, phones, dogs and contradictory public instructions give the practice a city to push against. The "prepared piano" is the walker: altered before contact, then altered again by what the contact actually does.
