ART ATHLETICS

Where the Body and the Work are One
THREE EVENTS ONE SYSTEM BOOTSTRAP LAUNCH LOS ANGELES
↓ SCROLL ↓

THREE EVENTS.
ONE ORGANISM.

Art Athletics is a Los Angeles–born race series that fuses athletic competition with live creative production. Every event rewards both the body and the work — and the hybrid athlete who masters both wins the most.

Three distinct formats. Every format is self-contained and completable alone. Every format is also designed to combine with the others, rewarding participants who bridge all three with elevated scoring, exclusive titles, and the coveted Triform designation.

"Movement is the canvas. The gate is the frame. The beat is the brush. Victory belongs to those who make something beautiful while running fast."

TORII
GATES RACE

The
Gate
System
"Every mile, a threshold."
26.2 MI 13.1 MI 10K

Runners pass through a series of hand-crafted torii-style gates — each one beautifully illuminated, each one a moment of pause within the race. At every gate, the app prompts a micro-interaction: a vetted message, a photo, a personal element, or a creative artifact.

The gates are not merely scenic. They are scoring nodes. Each pass is timestamped, each submission is reviewed, and each gate produces its own micro-victor. A runner can be fastest overall, or can win Gate 7 alone — and both victories are real.

📸 Photo Capture
Runner submits a photo framed by or inspired by the gate. Judged on composition, emotion, and race context. Vetted within 4 hrs post-event.
✍️ Vetted Message
Short-form text: observation, reflection, or dedication. 280 chars max. Displayed publicly post-vetting. No slurs, spam, or private info.
🎯 Personal Element
Runner carries/wears a chosen object, color, or symbol. Declared pre-race. App prompts documentation at gate. Verified for continuity.
🌬️ Haptic Encounter
Gate triggers sensory feedback: wind fan, fine mist, scent diffuser. Timed to runner's approach via GPS. Opt-out available at registration.

Not all completions are equal — and that's by design. Partial completion is honored and scored. This prevents DNF culture and rewards showing up.

Gate structure for marathon: 26 gates at mile markers 1–26, plus a final symbolic gate at the finish. Gates 1–9 are calibration; Gates 10–19 are the crucible; Gates 20–26 are the legend zone — scoring weight increases with distance.

ARTISTIC
RACE

The
Work
Runs
"Your output is your time."
FLEXIBLE ALL DISTANCES

The Artistic Race is not a separate event — it is a layer that sits on top of any other run. Every participant in any Art Athletics event can opt in. Their creative work, produced during or immediately after the race, is scored alongside their time.

The overall winner of the Artistic Race is not the fastest runner. It is the participant with the highest combined score across run time, photo, essay, and any additional art form they choose. You decide how much of yourself to put in.

Participants who submit only one art form are scored in their chosen track only, not penalized for the others. The overall hybrid score requires at least two art forms plus the run.

📷 Photography Track
Submit 1–5 photos taken during the race. Judged on: composition, race authenticity, emotional resonance. No post-processing beyond crop/exposure. Metadata checked.
✍️ Writing Track
300–900 word essay, poem, or narrative written within 4 hrs of finish. Theme: "What the race asked of me." Blind-judged by panel of 3.
🎵 Music / Sound Track
Original recorded piece, field recording, or composed arrangement captured during the race. Max 3 min. Phone quality accepted. Judged on originality.
🖼️ Visual Art Track
Painting, sketch, or digital work produced post-race within 24 hrs. Must reference the race experience. Submitted as hi-res image. No AI generation.

COMPLETE ATHLETE Overall Hybrid Trophy + prize pool + Triform status + lifetime entry discount
The "Complete Athlete" title — awarded to the highest combined scorer across run time and all submitted art forms — is the single most prestigious individual award in all of Art Athletics. It cannot be won by speed alone, and it cannot be won by art alone.

BPM DJ
FLOAT RUN

The
Beat
Moves
"Find your frequency. Then chase a faster one."
5K 10K LOOPS

Multiple elevated mobile floats circulate the course simultaneously. Each float carries a DJ playing vinyl at a precise, fixed BPM. Runners select their float at the start line. As they run, they are paced by the beat — the float moves at the corresponding speed.

Defection is legal, celebrated, and scored. Leave your float to catch a faster one, and earn Chaser Bonus points. Runners who successfully traverse from 70 BPM to 120 BPM across the race earn the Frequency Climber title.

🚐 Float Structure
Electric cargo vehicle or flatbed, elevated DJ platform. Vinyl-only per format rules. Speaker system: min 500W. Visual: LED light strips, banner with BPM displayed.
📍 Float Navigation
Floats follow a looping course. GPS-tracked. Runners and floats share course. Floats maintain speed to match BPM. App shows each float's live position.
🎯 Defection Rules
Runners may leave their float at any time by overtaking it. To join a new float, runner must physically stay within 30 meters for at least 400m. App verifies via GPS.
🔊 DJ Selection
Each DJ sets their BPM strictly. No drift. Curated from LA DJ pool. DJs also compete — float with highest average proximity score (runners staying close) wins Best Float.
Title Criteria Incentive
BAND CHAMPION Fastest finisher who stayed within one BPM band Per-band podium × 6 bands
CHASER CHAMPION Most successful band defections + final placement Trophy, gear, social feature
FREQUENCY CLIMBER Started at 70 BPM, finished at 120 BPM Rare title, limited merch drop
BEST FLOAT DJ whose float had highest avg runner proximity DJ credit, next event guaranteed slot
ANCHOR Runner who stays with one float the entire race Community honor + band finisher medal
The BPM Float Run is the most accessible entry point for non-runners. Walkers at 70 BPM are as valid as sprinters at 120. The music makes everyone a participant. The defection mechanic makes everyone a racer.

INTEGRATION
MATRIX

All three events are modular. A participant can run in all three simultaneously. The app handles multi-tracking. The scoring system computes individual event results and cross-event hybrid scores independently.

The Triform designation — the top overall achievement in Art Athletics — requires participation in all three events and a minimum qualifying score in each. It is the pinnacle of the format.

NPS Score Target
50%
Hybrid Participants
Art Submission Rate
Target: ≥60% of participants submit at least one art form. Below 40% signals format or UX issues.
Gate Completion Rate
Target: ≥75% full pass rate on 10K. Below 50% means gate interaction friction is too high.
Float Defection Rate
Target: ≥30% of BPM runners make at least one defection. Too low = bands not exciting enough.
Revenue Breakeven
Target: Event 3 self-funding. Track cost-per-participant. 100 runners at $35 = $3,500 gross. Target $1,800 net margin.
HIGH
Manual Art Vetting Bottleneck
App receives 200+ photo/essay submissions post-race
Pre-recruit 3–5 vetters per event. Build vetting queue into app. Set 4-hr post-event vetting window. Auto-reject obvious violations via keyword filter.
HIGH
Weather / Outdoor Disruption
Rain, heat, permits revoked day-of
Book rain date 2 weeks out for every event. Gate structure is covered. Float has weather cover. Communicate backup plan at registration. No refunds — credit to next event.
MED
Medical Response Gap
No on-site medical at early-phase events
2-minute medical response SLA: designate 1 trained first responder per 25 runners. Post 911 protocol at every gate. Collect emergency contact at registration. AED if >100 runners.
MED
Float GPS Sync Failures
App cannot confirm defection eligibility in real time
Fallback: runner self-declares defection at float; float operator confirms via radio. Honor system with post-event app reconciliation. GPS accuracy improves with Phase 2 app.
LOW
Gate Structure Failure
PVC/LED gate collapses or LED fails
Carry spare LED strips + cable ties to every event. Gates do not have to be functional for race to continue — mark position with cones. No structural risk to runners.
LOW
Low Art Submission Quality
Most submissions are low-effort or spam
Show example submissions at registration and at gate QR codes. Judge rubrics published pre-event. "Submitted" tier ensures no one feels excluded. Vetting handles spam.
The goal is not a perfect race. The goal is a race that produces beautiful things — fast times, strong photos, strange writing, unexpected music — and a community that believes the body and the work belong together. Build that, and the logistics follow.
